Funding update for the Academic Year 2024/2025

As we navigate changes in qualification funding for the upcoming academic year, we’re committed to keeping you informed about the latest updates. While we strive to provide the most accurate information, we always recommend checking the official government website for the most up-to-date details. If you have any questions or need assistance, your dedicated Business Development contact is always available to help.

Below, we highlight some key funding changes and how they may affect you and your learners.

Funding removal for low enrolment qualifications:

For the academic year 2024/2025, qualifications with low or no enrolments have had their funding removed. This decision aims to streamline resources and ensure that funding is allocated efficiently.

Moratorium on new qualifications:

Due to the ongoing moratorium, no new qualifications will receive funding for the next academic year. Additionally, we are unable to apply for funding for any current or new qualifications during this period.

Future funding aligned with IfATE reforms:

Starting from 2025, the only qualifications that will receive funding are those developed as part of the qualification reforms under the ifATE process. Cycle 1 of the reforms only included qualifications developed against for occupations and specialist areas. This ensures that funded qualifications meet the latest industry standards and educational requirements.

Government announcement 24 July – pause to initial 2024 defunding:

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced that it will be pausing the plan to defund existing post-16 qualifications. Bridget Phillipson confirmed the decision in a speech this week in the House of Commons.

What does this mean for you and your learners?

Qualifications in the active leisure sector were not due to have their funding removed until 2026, therefore the pause in defunding may not directly affect you. However, if you and your learners were using qualifications which had been marked for defunding you can now continue to have a choice of Level 3 pathways in 2024-25, either taking a T Level, or completing an alternative Level 3 qualification.

This pause to defunding will benefit learners and employers. As Lord Blunkett and other parliamentarians have pointed out, it’ll ensure that learners can continue to access qualifications that are right for their needs and that there is a pipeline of talent entering key sectors. We look forward to working with the new Government as they review the post-16 qualification reform at Level 3 and below.
