We’re excited to announce that our flagship Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification has been rebranded as the Level 2 Fitness Coach.
A modernised title that reflects how the fitness industry has evolved - with today’s fitness professionals expected to support clients both on the gym floor and beyond, using a coaching-led approach.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in fitness coaching.
Learners are provided with an understanding of anatomy, physiology and nutrition and how they relate to exercise and fitness. Learners are also provided with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan, deliver and supervise safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.
This qualification includes the essential knowledge and skills that are needed to meet the requirements of the physical activity sector’s minimum standards for deployment.
This qualification has been approved by IfATE, Ofqual and DfE to be recognised as a Technical Occupational Entry Qualification.
This qualification aligns to KSBs in the existing occupational standard(s) for leisure team member and enables entry to the aligned occupation(s) (including providing occupational entry competence with the requirement for further learning/training in work to reach full occupational competence).

Moving beyond instruction to real coaching.
As the sector shifts from equipment instruction to holistic coaching, we’re updating language to match what members and employers expect in 2026 and beyond.
Today’s Level 2 practitioner does more than instruct on equipment.
They:
- Guide behaviour change
- Support member confidence
- Deliver coaching conversations
- Contribute to community wellbeing
Same skills, greater impact
While the new title reflects how employers already describe the role in practice, the following remain exactly the same:
- Qualification content
- Learning outcomes
- Assessment requirements
- Entry level deployment status
Level 2 Fitness Coach delivers the same technical foundations, with clearer alignment to modern expectations.
Why the change?
With operators increasingly using the term Fitness Coach internally, the new title more accurately reflects how employers already describe the role in practice.
The updated title strengthens emphasis on:
- Communication
- Member engagement
- Coaching mindset
- Motivation skills
The updated title also:
- Aligns with modern club culture
- Supports recruitment marketing
- Reflects coaching led member experience
- Future proofs workforce language
